Emergency Medical Response - .50
Officer safety techniques 2.0/scenario-based hours – 2.0

Student Performance Objectives:

•    Understand verbiage such as lumens, candela, hot spot and spill
•    Understand the 5 ways light can be used
•    Understand and demonstrate one handed shooting techniques
•    Understand and demonstrate the 5 handheld light techniques

Prior to training commencing at the range, thorough safety, medical, and mindset briefing will be conducted. A primary and secondary medical officer will be established, as well as a primary and secondary communications officer. The location of the IFAK kit will be known to all. Mindset, and what is and is not acceptable will be delineated. Hot range will be explained, as well as the fact that everyone on the range is a safety officer. The firearms safety rules will be explained as below.
After the safety and medical brief, a brief block of instruction will be given on the proper storage, staging, and use of a tourniquet, both for self-aid and buddy aid.

There are four rules that apply to the safe handling of firearms, on or off the range:

1.    Always treat every gun as if they are loaded.

Get in the habit of performing a visual and physical of any gun you are handling or transferring/receiving from another.

2.    Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

A safe direction is determined by your environment. A safe direction can be up, down, out, or down range, all dependent on the environment you find yourself in.
For most in service training and qualifications, a safe direction is down or down range.

3.    Know your target, what is beyond your target, the transitional space in between, and your ability to hit your target.

4.    Keep your finger off of the trigger, until you have made a conscious decision to fire and you are on target.

A mindset briefing is conducted to make sure everyone's "head is in the game." Handling firearms is inherently dangerous, and participants must be on the same page as everyone else on the range.

If at any time one of these rules are broken, that student will be dismissed from class:

1.    A student has a flagrant safety violation

2.    A student muzzles or flags another participant.

3.    A student has a negligent discharge (ND.)
