Course Description:
This 24-hour course enables attendees to engage with Spanish-speaking, Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and successfully manage the first responder function, including identifying individuals. This includes handling general, and known risk traffic stops, affecting standing, kneeling, and prone arrests, and gathering the basic information for intake and booking. It also prepares attendees to respond to threats that might otherwise be missed when slang/code language is used in Spanish to communicate around the officer.
Course Objectives:
• Learn the essentials to gather information and complete paperwork in Spanish
• Acquire interview control techniques
• Learn to transition safely from scene security commands to investigative questioning
• Questioning to assess need for additional resources
• Become functional with arrest commands and control expressions in Spanish
• Learn to handle general/unknown-risk and known-risk/high-risk traffic stops in Spanish
• Recognize Spanish street-slang, gang slang, drug terms and weapons terms
• Recognize imminent danger and when to take safety precautions
• Learn to navigate cultural and behavioral differences to enhance preparedness & improve outcomes
• Become familiar with pertinent legal cases
