PURPOSE OF COURSE:
This 16-hour introductory course provides an overview to officers who are currently assigned to, or who have the potential to be assigned to dignitary protection operations, the skills and techniques necessary to successfully perform these services.
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The focus of this program is to provide law enforcement professionals with a foundation of skills and techniques required to successfully perform protective services. The course addresses all facets of a protective operation, including the pre-planning, execution, and debriefing phases. Special attention is given to the safe management of any operation.
The course consists of dynamic, multi-media classroom presentations, followed by a series of hands-on practical exercises which allow the participant to actively experience the concepts presented. Topics covered include close protection concepts, protective Intelligence, transportation, locations, etc. Participants are then given the opportunity to apply the lessons learned in a realistic scenario-based training experience, which reinforces the classroom topics covered.
COURSE GOALS: Participation in this class will prepare the student to:
• Demonstrate various foot formations and methods for clearing obstacles
• Demonstrate proper techniques for entering and exiting vehicles
• Demonstrate proper communication techniques
• Describe common elements of an attack on a principle
• Demonstrate proper response to attack techniques
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
Due to the sensitive nature of the materials taught, this course is open to sworn Law Enforcement Officers and agents only. Priority shall be given to personnel who are currently assigned or will soon be assigned to protective functions. Only the Department’s chief executive officer or their designated representative may enroll a participant in this program.
METHODS OF EVALUATION: Student performance will be evaluated by:
• Classroom feedback
• Elementary performance testing
• Scenario based simulation
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: This course is taught using dynamic multi-media Power Point driven presentations, with associated discussion and demonstrations. Hands on practical exercises, such as choreography exercises, attack on principle drills, and embark / debark drills are used to instruct and reinforce the lessons learned, and allows the student to actively experience the concepts taught. Key highlights include:
• In class lecture
• Practice drills and exercises to reinforce specific blocks of instruction
• Field exercises to apply and reinforce training concepts
The locations of field exercises will be determined with the assistance of host agency representatives. The cost for the proposed training with a minimum of 10 participants to a maximum of 18 participants will be finalized upon request. This cost includes all course materials and equipment and 16 hours of instruction.

• L.C.D. Projector and screen
• Student handout packages
• Un-marked Vehicles (one for every 3-4 students)
• Two-way radios (Mobile and hand held) with audio accessories
• Handheld magnetometers
• Protective contact padding
• “Police line” tape
• Various first aid equipment

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
This is a state certified course. Thus, no more than 10% of class time, or approximately 1 ½ hours may be missed. It is strongly suggested, however, that the student be in attendance for the entire session in order to maximize upon the knowledge and skill development associated with the training. Should a temporary absence from the class be necessary, it remains the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and arrange to obtain any information or materials missed due to the absence.
