PURPOSE OF COURSE:    

This five-day, 40-hour course was designed by to provide law enforcement trainers with the skills needed to properly instruct our 8 hour Emergency Vehicle Operator Course. By successfully completing this program, students will be qualified to teach their fellow law enforcement officers, as well as other personnel, proper techniques for tactical driving.

COURSE OVERVIEW:    
This program is designed to qualify instructors to teach the 8-hour Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course. Students will receive classroom instruction in vehicle operations and dynamics, as well as practical experience on the driving range. Students will also gain actual teaching experience by instructing portions of the 8-hour course.

COURSE GOALS:   
The goals of this course are:

•    To provide students with an opportunity to become proficient in the presentation of the instructional material.
•    Assist students in reducing the number and severity of traffic accidents involving personnel from their respective law enforcement agencies.
•    To provide students with an opportunity to further develop and refine their driving skills.
•    To provide students with an opportunity to develop

COURSE PREREQUISITES:    
This course will be offered to sworn personnel of law enforcement, sheriff's and public safety agencies. There are two sets of prerequisites for this course, the first affecting the sponsoring agency and the second affecting student participants:

1.    Agency: Only Chiefs, Sheriffs, and Public Safety Directors, or their designated representatives, may enroll student officers. Officers will NOT be allowed to enroll themselves.
2.    Student Participants: Only personnel who are currently employed by a unit of  local government, in a sworn capacity will be permitted to attend this program. Full-time personnel from member railroad, state or federal agencies not under the jurisdiction of the ILETSB may make an application to attend this program.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:    
Students will be required to demonstrate knowledge of all course materials. Additionally, the instructor will evaluate students’ comprehension and retention of course topics based on their participation in practical exercises/scenarios and discussions conducted during the course. Student performance on a final written examination will also be evaluated, with students required to receive a minimum passing score of 70%. 

Evaluation forms completed by each student will provide feedback to NITAB on the quality of the course content and the instructor’s effectiveness in delivering this content.

This course is conducted using the following methods of instruction:

•    In-class lecture
•    In-class review of student handout materials
•    In-class practical exercises
•    In-class general discussion

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/GRADING POLICY:    
Students must receive a minimum passing score of 70% on the final examination given at the end of this program to receive certification.

RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS:    
The instructor(s) utilize NITAB handout materials, a multi-media projector, lap top computer, screen, VCR, monitor, overhead projector, white or black board, dry erase markers or chalk, an eraser, 120 twelve-inch traffic cones, three cans of spray paint, and one quart of oil when teaching this course.

Students attending this program need to bring squad cars for the field exercise portion of the program.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: 
This is a state-certified course.  Consequently, no more than 10% of class time, or 4 hours, may be missed.  It is strongly suggested that students miss any time contact the instructor and make suitable arrangements to pick up and/or review missed materials or information presented.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: 
NITAB supports a strict policy on academic integrity. Students are responsible for their own work, including the preparation of research papers, case study reports and the taking of pre and post examinations. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade
