This course will provide a functional overview of law enforcement use of force and control tactics.  Students will gain an understanding of the complex intricacies of constitutionally based use of force, from pre-contact assessment and communication through physical tactics and human performance dynamics.  Students will receive technical instruction and participate in drilling and scenario based exercises to validate the effectiveness of the material.

This course will include:

    The Effective Management of Field Contacts
•    Behavior based threat assessment
•    Effective verbal, non-verbal and para-verbal communication
•    Management of distance and positioning, and its relationship to safety
•    Safer searching and handcuffing techniques
•    Dangers of inattentional blindness
•    Surviving sudden attack
Reasonable Use of Force
•    Graham v. Connor factors
•    Ineffective use of force often results in excessive use of force
•    Differentiating between force to accomplish lawful objectives and punitive force
•    Human performance limitations and he O.O.D.A. Loop (action v. reaction)
Vertical Entanglement
•    One of the most important and overlooked areas of control tactics
•    Balance and body dynamics
•    Why traditional defensive tactics fail to prepare officers for this critical range
•    A simple and effective takedown
Horizontal Entanglement
•    Escapes from the bottom position
•    Effective pins and the essential principles behind them
•    Handcuffing transitions
•    Weapon retention
