This 8 hour, evidence based program is designed for adults who encounter youth, ages 12-18, who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.  Students will learn about unique characteristics of adolescent development related to risk factors and warning signs of mental health challenges, substance abuse, or substance use disorders.  Attendees will learn steps to connect youth with appropriate professional care and peer/social support.  This is for both crisis and non-crisis situations.

At the conclusion of this presentation, students will:
•    Consider adolescent development, risk factors and protective factors in assessing situations with youth who may be developing or are in crisis.
•    Assess youth for risk of suicide or harm
•    Create/apply a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of a mental illness or who may be in a crisis
•    Operate with increased mental health literacy so as to decrease negative perceptions surrounding mental illnesses and addictions in youth

This class  does not teach people to diagnose or to provide treatment.
